How do I upgrade from free to Pro mid-cycle?

I am on the free plugin and want to add Pro now. Do I install Pro alongside free, and does my existing data carry over untouched?

One caveat for larger communities: keep an eye on the indexes. At a few thousand rows the difference is night and day.
